Description

His first novel, Hatter's Castle, written in 1931, was an immediate success, and Cronin gave up the practice of medicine to become a full-time author. The team encounter a suspicious car crash, an outbreak of the measles, a soldier in need of an amputation, a local dog infested with rabies – and Doctor Finlay tries his hand at hypnosis. Made famous by the much-loved adaptations for radio and television, the classic tales of Dr Finlay, his senior colleague Dr Cameron, and their unruffled housekeeper Janet, remain as fresh and entertaining now as they were upon first publication.

As with many short story collections these were (I believe) originally published in magazines and never really intended to make a story arc - indeed rather like the stories of Sherlock Holmes they do contradict each other here and there.Pretty boring, the doctor is given zero context as a character (despite being the main one), and the dialogs - gosh, real human beings don't talk like that. Bill Simpson stars as Doctor Finlay, determined to bring a sleepy Scottish village into the 20th century. She has since followed that up with The Cauldron of Life, The Sword of Light, and The Spear of Truth.

A thoroughly readable book, each chapter is a separate story woven together to mould an account of general practice in a small Scottish town. Of the 191 editions, it is thought that only 56 are still known to exist; of these some installments no longer survive in their original format (e. The first half consists of several short, slice-of-life stories about the life of a Scottish country doctor in the immediate pre-NHS era, and they're a bit dated in style but mostly interesting and enjoyable. The show is particularly poorly-preserved in the archives: although the first season survives intact, there are very large gaps in the known holdings.I was so shy I never uttered a word to him, but he lifted my case down onto the platform for me - I was so overcome I stuttered out a thank you and fled!

A lot of the "human interest" of his stories would have come not just from his own experiences but also those of his paternal grandparents, who ran a pub in the district, and from his mother - who was Scotland's first female public health inspector! On the whole, there are some charming stories in this book that make it very readable - ideal for a light, entertaining read. However, I found his successes quite tedious to read; I was pleased with the rare glimpses of Finlay's misfortune, just because they broke up the monotony.

Unfortunately few have heard of him these days but further essential reads would be ‘The Stars Look Down’ and ‘The Citadel’. The Tannochbrae ‘70s book tries to be a bit racy, lots of unnecessary references to sex and sleaziness.
