About this deal

Spanish for beginners: Learning the 300 most common words in Spanish can give you a really big comprehension fast There you have it: a guide to learn Spanish for beginners. I’d say even more: a guide that will take you from a beginner in Spanish, all the way to effortless conversations with native speakers! Don’t worry: even if it sounds counterintuitive now, this is going to make a lot of sense. And it will make learning Spanish much more fun for you!

As you may imagine, this is not the typical Spanish textbook that you’d follow in a class with lots of grammar and exercises. Although for some students this may seem discouraging, I actually find this useful and refreshing. Spanish for Dummies will provide you with some foundations and vocabulary that you can apply in different situations. As you may have seen, most of the topics presented are usual situations that you’ll face when traveling to a Spanish-speaking country. For that reason, the book contains common phrases and vocabulary that could be handy for those contexts. The informal “you” is tú. You use it with people you know well, family members, friends, and people who are your age or younger. Usted means formal “you,” and you’ll use it with people you don’t know, authority figures, and people older than you. When it comes to exercises, you won’t find many like you would in a regular Spanish textbook for beginners. As a teacher, I feel that having some exercises is necessary to practice and reinforce some concepts, but I understand that their objective is to help you talk. Instead, you’ll find some crossword puzzles and word search games to practice your vocabulary.

Here’s a list of the 625 most frequent words. You don’t necessarily have to learn them all (I suggest you already get started with step 2 while learning this list). That way, you don’t have to look for new conversations all the time and you can focus on learning Spanish, instead of thinking about WHAT to learn exactly. So yes, if you want you can speak Spanish from the beginning and get that paralyzing fear out of your system. This is one of the weird paradoxes in language learning that most people don’t get. But it’s very true. I don’t recommend usingsubtitles in English. They distract you too much and it’ll become difficult to listen to what the actors are saying in Spanish.
